Meteor

Because you have issues.

so, you have a problem getting meteor set up and running...

Because not everyone has exactly the same setup, there can sometimes be some issues installing, configuring and running meteor on your htpc. There are generally some pretty simple explanations for most issues, so check out the faq. If that fails, then there are some steps to follow to get us the information we need to help you out.

faq

  • When I try to connect to my PC by entering its name, Meteor says "Cannot connect to server". What gives?

Windows Phone 7 seems to have a problem on some networks where it can't find computers by their name. Instead, you can enter the IP address of the computer. If that still doesn't work, let us know!

  • Why have you called this app "Meteor"?

Well, I'd like to say that I was asleep one night and was visited by a giant flaming turtle who told me that we should name our application in tribute to the Willamette Meteorite; the largest meteorite found in North America and that it came down to a single vote between its final name and "Willy". Unfortunately, that wouldn't exactly be true. The real reason lies in the less awesome fact that Meteor is an anagram of "remote" and it ended up being a codename that survived into release.

  • Does Meteor work with Windows Home Server?

Yes! You can install the Meteor Hub service on both WHS v1 and WHS 2011.

  • Does Meteor work with extenders like an Xbox 360?

Yes, Meteor will work with extenders.

  • Does Meteor support multiple languages?

Meteor currently supports English and German. If you'd like to help by translating Meteor into another language, let us know!

  • Can I control my media center over the internet?

Yes! See here for instructions on how to set it up.

  • Can I use Meteor to stream my media over the internet to my phone?

Not just yet, but we do have plans to implement this functionality in a version not too far away - stay tuned!

  • Does Meteor require an internet connection?

Only if you want to use the remote access or notification features.

  • How does Meteor select folders to trawl for movies/tv/music?

For music and recorded TV, Meteor uses the Windows Media Player libraries. For videos, Meteor looks at all the folders in the Windows Videos library. If you have Media Browser installed, it will also look in any folders configured in Media Browser.

Please see this page for more information on how to set up your environment properly.

  • So, I do have some folders showing up. How does Meteor grab the metadata? Or choose the correct episodes?

Meteor uses the same files used by Media Browser (metadata.xml) and fetched by programs such as Metabrowser and MediaScout. If this stuff isn't found, Meteor will do its best impression of a wizard and attempt to parse your files directly; but this is not ideal. Alternatively, as of version 1.2 Meteor can find this metadata itself - go here to see how to set it up!

If you have metadata that isn't showing up properly in Meteor, it would be good to have an example of how your metadata files are set up, and maybe a sample of the metadata so we can see how to fix it. Send your information to support and we'll do our best to try and fix your problem.

  • Apparently Meteor can act as a remote control for Zune - how do I set that up?

Glad you asked - see this page for instructions.

  • Can I change what happens when I press the power button in Meteor?

When you press the power button, Meteor does whatever your computer is set up to do when you press the physical power button on your HTPC. So, to change what the power button does in Meteor you can change that setting in Windows. You can find it by searching for "power" in the start menu, then choose "Change what the power buttons do", then change the action specified for "When I press the power button".

if you still have issues...

If none of the suggestions work and you still have problems installing, running or connecting to your meteor service, then we need to get some more information from you. Follow these steps:

  • Create a zipped archive of the C:\ProgramData\LandDolphin\MeteorHub folder.

  • Create a zipped archive of the C:\Users\[Current User]\AppData\Local\LandDolphin\Meteor folder.

  • Email these files to support along with your system's current locale and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
